The breed's massive well-developed chest, heavy mane of hair and tapering hindquarters earned them the nickname of "Little Lion Dog" in their native China. An ancient breed regarded as the "Royal Dog of China" for centuries, the Chinese believed Pekingese were sacred and punished the theft of the dog with death.
